Customer Reviews about Waste Disposal & Recycling Center:

  • I had a fantastic time going to the Landfill. It was a great experience. Even when we went up the trash hill, it did not even smell like trash. This is a great place to go to if you want to learn about how trash gets disposed and moved from place to place. I would love to go back again and learn more. I was so interested by how they did things.

Seems ridiculous really there is no convenient place a City of Durham resident can drop off a small pickup of yard waste. I can subscribe to the yard waste program. Yet another uber size bucket to store on my property. Hours 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday Morning, hardly makes this convenient if you work. Compare this to surrounding counties who have much better coordination between city and county drop offs. I can of course purchase a certificate to use the County facility, which is just few miles from my house. But I need to take the afternoon off to to downtown Durham to even purchase the ticket. Inconvenient hours, 20 miles from my house in South Durham and even getting access to paid option from the County is inconvenient.

  • The Durham Landfill was a very enjoyable and distinguished part of our Durham Challenge experience. During the Durham Challenge, groups within the school I attend worked to complete a community service project. My group worked on a project relating to waste, so we decided it would be beneficial to visit the landfill. Our tour guide, Patricia, made our experience at the landfill memorable, informational, and inspiring. First, she prepared souvenirs for us that were made from recycled material, which was very thoughtful and welcoming. Next, we began our tour of the landfill itself. Although we had to remain inside the bus during the tour, we were still able to smell, see, and hear everything that makes the landfill so undesired, yet essential. It was very powerful to see how much waste is disposed of and even more impactful to see the tons of it buried underneath the very earth we drove on. Everyone is aware that landfills exist, but until you visit one, it is virtually impossible to grasp the fact that expansive amounts of land are having to be filled with the trash from our very homes. This instantly contaminates the land, making it unfeasible and unsafe to be used for any natural and beneficial activities such as farming. However, Patricia also taught us about the future plan of a compost building in hopes of reducing food waste and being able to produce organic soil for gardening and agricultural purposes. It was hearing these types of creative new ways that the Durham Landfill is trying to benefit the community that was so inspiring. All in all, I recommend visiting the Durham Waste Disposal and Recycling Center if you are looking for a meaningful, informative, and interesting way to learn about waste in the Durham community.

  • I really loved going to and learning about trash and the process of how trash is recycled. It was a great experience and I recommend you take your school too and educate them about this subject. I had a lot of fun and wish I could go back. It didn't even smell that bad! I loved that we could sit down in our bus while Patricia, one of the ladies that works in the office at the Durham Landfill, taught us. I also loved getting the opportunity to learn so much and even see and drive on the the place where the trash has been. Patricia was a great teacher and engaged us even when she was teaching us about trash. I loved her energy and it made me listen better. Thank you so much Durham Landfill for giving us this opportunity and letting us learn.
